People Hate Me
by Veronica Cardona

People hate me.
I do care.
Maybe I just want to be.
People say things,
yes it hurts me.
But they don’t understand
I hate my freakin’ life.
I just wasn’t meant to be here.
I wish at least one person could
say I love you.
But that’s ok. No one
loves me anyway.
People say stuff. Yes, to
truly hurt one’s feelings…
They just don’t
know what’s going on in
that person’s life.

The King of Math

by Liza Monroy

While subtracting the color
and adding the love
so sat the King of Math
erasing the lines with poignant
precision drawing the curves
and making the incisions
to C-section to force the labor
out of the mother of oppression
induce the birth of the
colorless equation
he figured the improper fraction
the numerator looming a white cloud
over the denominator
bit the pencil’s eraser
pondered difficult the King of Math
did
scribbled the work down
on bits of paper
‘til the equality
shone like a diamond
in a rough
the equality
the WHOLE number
not just a piece
all of its dimensions
inside of its
crease
all the factors
shake each others
hands thanks
to the King of Math’s
speech
