Shinky Took Offense
by Liza Monroy
the man on the phone
wouldnt leave me alone
the stream from ladies
were rising like vapors
they were used to soft
seat cushions and Englishmen
in blazers
from the midst of the crowd
came a shout from Shaunte
she had just found a frog leg
floating in her champagne
she took the glass and
handed it to Jermaine
all her scales were shining
like crazy diamonds and
her heels were tapping as
she ran for the door
bottles were popping as
sweaters flew to the floor
from an early morning
to an ugly night
Shinky took offense
and quickly took flight
I took a seat myself
and got tangled on
Moises vines
that sits on his lap
just another poor Rican
quicker than a cat-scratch and hotter than a fever
you lover you love her you lover and you leave her
step in the car you ask Jesus
to drive you that far
when the smoking gets
nuts
she tells her Tia its such a sad song
she cries and cries whenever she puts it on
I turn my head away from the moron but now she
starts to sing through her nose
and I
leave Shinkys
house on
a low note
