The Children's Department schedules many programs for children during the year. Click on the above links or scroll down to see what the Children's Department has planned for this month. All events are free. Registration is required where noted.

All areas of the library are accessible to people with disabilities. The Vineland Public Library is located at 1058 E. Landis Ave., Vineland, NJ 08360


General Information

The Children's Department at the Vineland Public Library keeps busy all year long. During the school year, we assist children and young adults, parents and teachers with their research and computer questions. In the summer, we provide programs to encourage learning when school is not in session. Throughout the year, the Children's Department provides programs that encourage family literacy and a love of the library.

Class/Group Visits

Various teachers from Vineland schools (public, private and homeschoolers) schedule class visits to our library. We can take no more than 30 students at a time. Call early! We get booked quickly at the beginning of the school year. There may be as much as a two month waiting period. Teachers may ask us to cover specific topics, but here is a general listing of the programs we offer:

Preschool/Day Care Centers Stories, how to get a library card, how to find books in our Easy Reader section--45 minutes.
Kindergarten Tour of the library, stories, how to get a library card, library rules, how to find books in our Easy eader section--45 minutes to an hour.
1st & 2nd grade Tour of the library, stories, how to get a library card, library rules, how to find story books--1 hour.
3rd - 6th grade Stories, book talk, how to find books in the library (an introduction to the Dewey Decimal System & our online catalog), how to choose a book for a report.  How to use the library for research. All programs are 1 hour.
Homeschoolers We can modify any of the above programs for your group.

Families invited to Vineland Library movie and craft program

Children and their parents are invited to a Family Movie and Craft Night to see The Emoji Movie on Tuesday, November 28 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Community Event Room on the first floor of the Vineland Public Library.

An outcast emoji goes on a journey across various apps in this comedy set inside a smartphone. This 2017 animated feature is rated PG.

Children will make a craft immediately following the movie.

Participants are invited to bring their own refreshments. Closed captioning is available upon request.

Library and Monarch Family Success Center partner for gratitude program

The Vineland Public Library is partnering with the Inspira Monarch Family Success Center of Vineland to take a moment and think about the good things in our lives. A Family Gratitude Program will be held on Friday, November 10 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Community Event Room on the first floor of the Vineland Public Library. Families with children ages 12 and younger are invited to participate.

Families will enjoy a short movie featuring Winnie-the-Pooh, refreshments and a craft. There will be a drawing for a holiday food basket (you must be present to win), sponsored by the Monarch Family Success Center and children will be invited to fill out and decorate a leaf describing something for which they are thankful, which will be displayed at the Success Center on Chestnut Avenue.

Ages 10 & younger

Children enjoy stories at Vineland Library Read-A-Thon

The Children’s Department at the Vineland Public Library invites families to celebrate reading this fall with stories and prizes at a Read-A-Thon.
The Read-A-Thon will be held Saturday, November 18 from 10:30 a.m. to noon upstairs in the Children’s Department.

Enjoy an ongoing story time for children ages 10 and younger and their parents or caregivers (come and go as you please), as well as random prize drawings – you must be present to win! Winners of the Design a Bookmark contest for grades 1-6 will also be announced at the Read-A-Thon.

Volunteers from local Girl Scout Troops 53957 & 56542 will be reading to the children. The program is free. Registration is not required.

Children who attend a story session will receive at least one free book.

Funding for the giveaway books is provided by the Friends of the Vineland Public Library.

Children younger than age 9 must be accompanied by an adult at all times in the library.

Babies

Vineland Public Library provides Story Time for babies

Babies ages 6-23 months and their parents or caregivers are invited to Baby Story Time, Fridays, November 3, 10 & 17 from 10 to 10:30 a.m. in the Children's Department.

Babies will enjoy simple stories, nursery rhymes and songs, and will have one-on-one reading time with their parent or caregiver during the story time.

Age 2

Toddlers learn to love books at Story Time Program

Two-year-old children and their parents or caregivers are invited to the Vineland Public Library for Toddler Time Tuesdays, November 7, 14 and 21 from 10 to 10:30 a.m. in the Children's Department.

The story time features books, songs, fingerplays and other activities to get toddlers excited about reading.

Ages 3 to 5

 

Preschoolers listen to stories, make crafts at Vineland Library

Children ages 3 to 5 and their parents or caregivers are invited to Preschool Story Time at the Vineland Public Library.

Join library staff for stories, songs and crafts on Wednesdays, November 1, 8 and 15 from 10 to 10:45 a.m. in the Children’s Department.

Grades 1 to 6

Children can enter Design a Bookmark Contest at the Vineland Library

Children in grades 1 to 6 who like to draw are invited to enter the Design a Bookmark Contest at the Vineland Public Library. Winning bookmarks will be printed up and given out in the library with the artists’ names on the back of the bookmark.

Entry forms are available in the library’s Children’s Department or you may download one here. The contest is open to children in grades 1 to 6. Entries will be judged only against others within the same grade level. The winning bookmarks are printed by Standard Publishing in Vineland and are funded by The Friends of the Vineland Public Library.

All artwork must be ORIGINAL. The contest theme this year is “Libraries Rock."

Bring or mail entries to the Children’s Department from October 10th until the library’s closing time (5 p.m.) Saturday, November 4, 2017. Entries received after November 4th will not be eligible. Winners’ names will be announced in the Children’s Department Saturday, November 18 at 10:30 a.m. during a Celebrate Reading! Read-A-Thon.

Ages 6 to 8

Children ages 6 to 8 discuss book at the Vineland Library

Children ages 6 to 8 can participate in a discussion of The Rooster Who Would Not Be Quiet by Carmen Agra Deedy on Wednesday, November 29, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Children’s Department at the Vineland Public Library.

The mayor of the noisy city of La Paz institutes new laws forbidding all singing, but a brave little rooster decides he must sing, despite the progressively severe punishments he receives for continuing to crow.

Participants will receive a free copy of the book to be discussed when they register, while supplies last. Registrants must attend the book discussion if they pick up a book!

Ages 6 to 12

Children can read to a dog at the Vineland Public Library

Children ages 6 to 12 years old are invited to sharpen their reading skills at the Vineland Public Library by reading to a dog. Teams from Fido and Friends Assisted Therapy Group will be in the Children’s Department on Thursday, November 9, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Registration will begin at 6 p.m. the evening of the program and children will take turns being paired with dogs that they can read to one-on-one for short periods of time.

All Fido and Friends dogs are insured Certified Therapy Dogs.

Children younger than age 9 must be accompanied by an adult at all times in the library.

Ages 7 to 16

Vineland Library hosts Pokémon Club

Children and teens ages 7 and up are invited to participate in a Pokémon Club at the Vineland Public Library on Saturday, November 18, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Community Event Room.Join Senior Library Assistant Juni Ruiz for a discussion of all things Pokémon. Participants are invited to bring their Nintendo DS handhelds, Pokémon games, trading cards, and anything else related to Pokémon.

Ages 9 & up/All ages (children, teens & adults)

 

Vineland Library participates in International Games Day/Pokémon League

Children ages 9 and older, teens and their parents/caregivers are invited to enjoy playing games on Thursday, November 2 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Children’s Event Room on the second floor of the Vineland Public Library, as part of International Games Week

International Games Week runs from October 29th through November 4th and is an initiative run by volunteers from around the world to reconnect communities through their libraries around the educational, recreational and social value of all types of games.

The library’s Farfetch'd Fiction Pokémon League will also meet during this program. A Pokémon League provides fans of both the Pokémon Trading Card Game and the Pokémon video games with a local place to get together and have some fun. Using your own cards and Pokémon video games, you can play, trade, and even earn cool prizes! Please note: if you are ONLY coming for Pokémon League, there is no age limit and you do not need to register.

Ages 9 and up

 

Children ages 9 & up discuss book at the Vineland Library

Children ages 9 and older are invited to participate in a discussion of Moo by Sharon Creech on Tuesday, November 21, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Children’s Department at the Vineland Public Library.

Twelve-year-old Reena, who has recently moved to rural Maine, tries to adjust to a new environment while unexpectedly bonding with an ornery cow.

Participants will receive a free copy of the book to be discussed when they register, while supplies last. Registrants must attend the book discussion if they pick up a book!

If your child is not interested in the book or is unable to finish it before the night of the discussion, please return the book in good condition so that another child may join the discussion.
