The Children's Department schedules many programs for children during the year. Click on the above links or scroll down to see what the Children's Department has planned for this month. All events are free. Registration is required where noted.

All areas of the library are accessible to people with disabilities. The Vineland Public Library is located at 1058 E. Landis Ave.


General Information

The Children's Department at the Vineland Public Library keeps busy all year long. During the school year, we assist children and young adults, parents and teachers with their research and computer questions. In the summer, we provide programs to encourage learning when school is not in session. Throughout the year, the Children's Department provides programs that encourage Family Literacy and a love of the library.

Class/Group Visits

Various teachers from area schools (public, private and homeschoolers) schedule class visits to our library. We can take no more than 30 students at a time. Call early! We get booked quickly at the beginning of the school year. There may be as much as a two month waiting period. Teachers may ask us to cover specific topics, but here is a general listing of the programs we offer:

Preschool/Day Care Centers – Stories, how to get a library card, how to find books in our Easy Reader section--45 minutes.
Kindergarten – Tour of the library, stories, how to get a library card, library rules, how to find books in our Easy eader section--45 minutes to an hour.
1st & 2nd grade – Tour of the library, stories, how to get a library card, library rules, how to find story books--1 hour.
3rd - 6th grade – Stories, book talk, how to find books in the library (an introduction to the Dewey Decimal System & our CLUES computers), how to choose a book for a report.  How to use the library for research. All programs are 1 hour.
Homeschoolers – We can modify any of the above programs for your group.

7th grade and above – Please call the Reference Department at 794-4244, ext. 4243.

Display

Children’s artwork on display at Vineland Public Library in April

The Vineland Public Library Children’s Department will feature a display of artwork from children affiliated with Family Service Specialized Foster Care and Treatment Homes in Vineland.

The display will feature clay figures and drawings titled “Got Love? What Does Love Mean to Us?” and will include informational books for children and adults about foster care and adoption.

The display will be up through the month of April.

Ages 10 and Younger

Vineland Library celebrates National Library Week with Read-A-Thon


Children ages 10 and younger are invited to the Vineland Public Library for a Read-A-Thon celebrating National Library Week.

The Read-A-Thon will be held Saturday, April 17, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Children’s Department. Enjoy an extended story time for children ages 10 and younger (come and go as you please), as well as random prize drawings – you must be present to win!

Each child who attends a story session will receive at least one free book.

Funding for the prizes and book giveaways is provided by the Friends of the Vineland Public Library.

National Library Week is the American Library Association’s national holiday — a special time to celebrate the contributions of all types of libraries and librarians. The 2010 event will be observed April 11-17 with the theme “Communities Thrive @your library™.” Come see what your library has to offer during National Library Week!

Children ages 8 and younger must be accompanied by an adult at all times in the library.

Shadow puppet show & craft at the Vineland Public Library

Children ages 10 and younger and their parents or caregivers are invited to a Shadow Puppet Show performed by the Vineland Public Library’s Teen Club on Saturday, April 24 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the Children’s Dept.

Vineland Public Library Teen Club members will perform the short puppet show, which will be followed by a puppet craft. The puppet show is based on a spring story by Margaret Wise Brown. Following this short puppet show, children will be invited to make their own puppets.

Registration is required for this free program, as space is limited.

Please arrive on time so that you don’t miss the show!

Children ages 8 and younger must be accompanied by an adult at all times in the library.

Babies

Vineland Public Library provides Story Time for babies

Babies ages 6-23 months and their parents or caregivers are invited to Baby Story Time, Fridays, April 9, 16 and 23 from 10:30 to 11 a.m. in the Children's Department.

Babies will enjoy simple stories, nursery rhymes and songs, and will have one-on-one reading time with their parent or caregiver during the story time.

Registration is requested for this free program.

Age 2

Toddlers learn to love books @ your library®

Two-year-old children and their parents or caregivers are invited to the Vineland Public Library for Toddler Time Tuesdays, April 6, 13 and 20 from 10:30 to 11 a.m. in the Children's Department.

The story time features books, songs, fingerplays and other activities to get toddlers excited about reading.

Registration is requested for this free program.

Ages 3 to 5

Preschoolers listen to stories, make crafts at Vineland Library story time

Children ages 3 to 5 and their parents or caregivers are invited to Preschool Story Time at the Vineland Public Library.

Join library staff for stories and crafts on Wednesdays, April 7, 14 and 21 from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. in the Children’s Department.

Registration is required for this free program, as space is limited. Craft supplies are provided by The Friends of the Vineland Public Library.

Ages 6 to 8


Children ages 6 to 8 discuss Pigsty at the Vineland Library

Children ages 6 to 8 can participate in a discussion of Pigsty by Mark Teague on Tuesday, April 13, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Children’s Department at the Vineland Public Library.

When Wendell doesn’t clean up his room, a whole herd of pigs comes to live with him.

Registration is required for the book discussion. Participants will receive a free copy of the book to be discussed when they register in person. Books are available in the Children’s Department.

Registrants must attend the book discussion if they pick up a book!

Funding for the giveaway books is provided by The Friends of the Vineland Public Library.

Ages 7 to 18

Vineland Library hosts Pokémon Club

Children and teens ages 7 and up are invited to participate in a Pokémon Club at the Vineland Public Library on Saturday, April 24 from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Community Event Room.

Join Library Assistant Juni Ruiz for a discussion of all things Pokémon. Participants are invited to bring their Nintendo DS handhelds, Pokémon games, trading cards, and anything else related to Pokémon.

Registration is required for this free program.

Children ages 8 and younger must be accompanied by an adult at all times in the library.

Ages 9 and up

Children ages 9 & up play Harry Potter game at Vineland Library

Children ages 9 and up who have read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling are invited to play the Harry Potter Trivia Game at the Vineland Public Library.

Join library staff for Harry Potter Game Night, Tuesday, April 20 from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Children’s Department. Participants MUST have read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

Registration is required for this program, as space is limited.

Children ages 9 & up discuss The Lightning Thief at the Vineland Library

Children ages 9 and up are invited to participate in a discussion of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, on Thursday, April 22 from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Children’s Department at the Vineland Public Library.

Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson learns he is a demigod, the son of a mortal woman and Poseidon, god of the sea. His mother sends him to a summer camp for demigods, where he and his new friends set out on a quest to prevent a war between the gods.

Registration is required for the book discussion. Participants will receive a free copy of the book to be discussed when they register in person. Registrants must attend the book discussion if they pick up a book!

Funding for the giveaway books is made possible by The Friends of the Vineland Public Library.

The library has limited funding for books for our discussions. If your child is not interested in the book or is unable to finish it before the night of the discussion, please return the book in good condition so that another child may join the discussion.
