The Children's Department schedules many programs for children during the year. Click on the above links or scroll down to see what the Children's Department has planned for this month. All events are free. Registration is required where noted.

General Information

The Children's Department at the Vineland Public Library keeps busy all year long. During the school year, we assist children and young adults, parents and teachers with their research and computer questions. In the summer, we provide programs to encourage learning when school is not in session. Throughout the year, the Children's Department provides programs that encourage family literacy and a love of the library.

Class/Group Visits

Various teachers from Vineland schools (public, private and homeschoolers) schedule class visits to our library. We can take no more than 30 students at a time. Call early! We get booked quickly at the beginning of the school year. There may be as much as a two month waiting period. Teachers may ask us to cover specific topics, but here is a general listing of the programs we offer:

Preschool/Day Care Centers Stories, how to get a library card, how to find books in our Easy Reader section--45 minutes.
Kindergarten Tour of the library, stories, how to get a library card, library rules, how to find books in our Easy eader section--45 minutes to an hour.
1st & 2nd grade Tour of the library, stories, how to get a library card, library rules, how to find story books--1 hour.
3rd - 6th grade Stories, book talk, how to find books in the library (an introduction to the Dewey Decimal System & our online catalog), how to choose a book for a report.  How to use the library for research. All programs are 1 hour.
Homeschoolers We can modify any of the above programs for your group.

Families invited to Vineland Library movie and craft program

Children and their parents are invited to a Family Movie and Craft Night Tuesday, March 27 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Community Event Room on the first floor of the Vineland Public Library.

A boy journeys into the Land of the Dead to seek forgiveness from his ancestors and lift a curse.

This 2017 animated feature is rated PG.

Children will make a craft immediately following the movie.

Participants are invited to bring their own refreshments. Closed captioning is available upon request.

This film is being shown in compliance with a license from Movie Licensing USA. The movie license and craft supplies are funded by The Friends of the Vineland Public Library.

All Ages

NJ Theatre Alliance's Stages Festival features 'A Cinderella Tale'

New Jersey Theatre Alliance presents Pushcart Players’ production of A Cinderella Tale . . . Happily Ever After on Thursday, March 8, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Vineland Public Library Children’s Department. This event is part of the New Jersey Theater Alliance’s Stages Festival, the state’s largest annual theatre festival that provides free and discounted theatre events for all ages throughout the month of March. This event is free.

Based on the classic tale “Cinderella,” this production will take audiences on a sometimes happy, sometimes sad—but always compelling—journey fueled by inner beauty, courage and kindness as they triumph over greed, arrogance and bully behavior.

The Stages Festival offers dozens of performances, workshops, classes, and events at theatres, art centers, libraries, schools, senior centers, and other community venues throughout the state. The program was developed to encourage New Jersey’s residents to attend their local professional theatres by making the experience affordable, accessible, and fun. Since its inception 20 years ago, the program has served more than 190,000 people.

Founded in 1981, New Jersey Theatre Alliance is the first statewide organization for professional, not-for-profit theatre companies and is a leader in developing model programs that foster collaboration, cooperation, and audience development. The Alliance provides member theatres a wide range of supportive services and programs, and assists member theatres in their growth and development, helping them reach their full potential. For arts patrons, the Alliance provides accessibility services, discount ticketing through NJArtsTix, and various public programs including The Stages Festival.

The Stages Festival is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts; Bank of America; and The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey. Ages 10 & younger

Young ‘princesses’ invited for regal story time at Vineland Library

Calling all princesses!

Children ages 10 and younger are invited to wear their fancy clothes at the annual Princess Party Story Time at the Vineland Public Library on Saturday, March 24, from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the Children’s Department.

Listen to stories about princesses, make a craft and enjoy royal lemonade and light refreshments.

Babies

Vineland Public Library provides Story Time for babies

Babies ages 6-23 months and their parents or caregivers are invited to Baby Story Time, Fridays, March 9, 16 & 23 from 10 to 10:30 a.m. in the Children's Department.

Babies will enjoy simple stories, nursery rhymes and songs, and will have one-on-one reading time with their parent or caregiver during the story time.

Age 2

Toddlers learn to love books at Story Time Program

Two-year-old children and their parents or caregivers are invited to the Vineland Public Library for Toddler Time Tuesdays, March 6, 13 and 20 from 10 to 10:30 a.m. in the Children's Department.

The story time features books, songs, fingerplays and other activities to get toddlers excited about reading.

Ages 3 to 5

 

Preschoolers listen to stories, make crafts at Vineland Library

Children ages 3 to 5 and their parents or caregivers are invited to Preschool Story Time at the Vineland Public Library.

Join library staff for stories, songs and crafts on Wednesdays, March 7, 14 and 21 from 10 to 10:45 a.m. in the Children’s Department.

Ages 5 to 12

Join the Make & Move Club at the Vineland Library for NJ Makers Day Program

Make & Move Club, Inc. of Vineland will be on hand to celebrate NJ Makers Day on Saturday, March 10 from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the Community Event Room.

Children ages 5 to 12 are invited to enjoy a variety of hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) activities.

NJ Makers Day is designed to be a statewide single-day event that celebrates, promotes, and in many cases may introduce maker culture, as well as the values associated with making, tinkering and STEM-based learning. Makerspaces across the state are having a significant impact on education and job skills development by providing access to people, information, resources, and tools that facilitate making to a wide variety of skill levels.

Make & Move Club, Inc. is an after school non-profit based out of Cumberland County. Their mission is to reach youth in at-risk communities through STEM & Fitness.

Ages 6 to 8

Children ages 6 to 8 discuss book at the Vineland Library

Children ages 6 to 8 can participate in a discussion of Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Peña on Thursday, March 15, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Children’s Department at the Vineland Public Library.

A boy named CJ learns to appreciate the beauty in everyday things during a bus ride with his grandmother. This book won the 2016 Newbery Medal for outstanding children’s literature.

Participants will receive a free copy of the book to be discussed when they register, while supplies last. Registrants must attend the book discussion if they pick up a book!

Funding for the giveaway books is provided by The Friends of the Vineland Public Library.

Ages 6 to 12

Children can read to a dog at the Vineland Public Library

Children ages 6 to 12 years old are invited to sharpen their reading skills at the Vineland Public Library by reading to a dog. Teams from Fido and Friends Assisted Therapy Group will be in the Children’s Department on Thursday, March 29, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Registration will begin at 6 p.m. the evening of the program and children will take turns being paired with dogs that they can read to one-on-one for short periods of time.

All Fido and Friends dogs are insured Certified Therapy Dogs.

Children younger than age 9 must be accompanied by an adult at all times in the library.

Ages 7 to 16

Vineland Library hosts Pokémon Club

Children and teens ages 7 and up are invited to participate in a Pokémon Club at the Vineland Public Library on Saturday, March 17, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Community Event Room. Join Senior Library Assistant Juni Ruiz for a discussion of all things Pokémon. Participants are invited to bring their Nintendo DS handhelds, Pokémon games, trading cards, and anything else related to Pokémon.

Pokémon League at the Vineland Library

Pokémon trainers of all ages are invited to attend the Farfetch'd Fiction League at the Vineland Public Library on Saturday, March 17, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the Community Event Room on the first floor of the Vineland Public Library.

A Pokémon League provides fans of both the Pokémon Trading Card Game and the Pokémon video games with a local place to get together and have some fun. Using your own cards and Pokémon video games, you can play, trade, and even earn cool prizes! The best part is that you can do all this with other Pokémon players who love collecting and playing just as much as you do.

Even if you don't know all the rules of the game, at a League you can learn game basics and, in no time, perfect your strategy! Joining a League is the best way to hone your skills to compete in Pokémon tournaments, from League Challenges all the way up to the World Championships.

Ages 9 and up

 

Children ages 9 & up discuss book at the Vineland Library

Children ages 9 and older are invited to participate in a discussion of Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt on Thursday, March 22, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Children’s Department at the Vineland Public Library.

Ally has been smart enough to fool a lot of smart people. Every time she lands in a new school, she is able to hide her inability to read by creating clever yet disruptive distractions. She is afraid to ask for help and that her secret will be discovered.

Participants will receive a free copy of the book to be discussed when they register, while supplies last. Registrants must attend the book discussion if they pick up a book!

If your child is not interested in the book or is unable to finish it before the night of the discussion, please return the book in good condition so that another child may join the discussion.
